We live in a world where fear and being afraid dominate the emotions of people. There is fear of disease epidemics, hunger, poverty, natural catastrophes and death.
In our country during this election year, Republicans fear that a Democratic president will elect liberal Supreme Court Justices. The Democrats fear that if a Republican candidate is elected president, they could lose power in both the Senate and House.
Much of the world, especially Europe, fear terrorist attacks by Isis terrorists. Islamic religion is feared, in part, because of sharia law. Syrian refugees are seeking a place to live, but it is feared that many terrorists might infiltrate through their numbers.
The Old and New Testaments of the Bible remind us again and again not fear or be afraid. Christians believe that God created the heavens and the earth. God is sovereign in this world. The disorder in his world is due to the behavior of sinful mankind.
Through Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection God the Father promises a coming renewed creation. The Lord’s prayer promises such. Jesus reminds us that in the present world, we will have trouble, but be not afraid, because He has overcome the world (John 16:33.) The promise of resurrection, and coming Kingdom of God in it’s completeness takes away the fear of death.
Therefore, if we have put our trust in Jesus, we need not fear or be afraid.
